Hearlallujah!
Okay, so that wasn’t as clever as Jason’s “The Dawn of a New Eara”, but I tried. As you may have already figured out, Jason got his hearing aids this weekend!! I don’t think I’ve mentioned his hearing loss on this blog before, but he gives a pretty full account on his blog, so I’ll spare you the details. I will say, however, that it is amazing how far hearing aids have come in a few years.
When I was at RIT, I had many friends who were students at NTID (National Technical Institute for the Deaf), which is part of RIT but still separate. Anyway, most of them had hearing aids that you’ve probably seen before. They had the big skin-toned receiver behind the ear and then a molded piece that sat outside the ear canal. It was obvious they had hearing aids (besides the fact that they were usually using sign language). Plus, the feedback from the hearing aids was sometimes unbearable for me as a hearing person.
So anyway, the HAs Jason got are called Sebotek and they are awesome so far. Of course, this is the opinion of the non-wearer, and I know Jason has had some discomfort, so if you want his story, go to his website! They are virtually invisible unless you are up-close and looking specifically for them. He was getting a little feedback this weekend, but he went in Monday to get a better fit and now its almost nonexistent. It has made a huge difference in the way he hears things (as you might think it would), and conversations are a lot easier now. At least they’re easier for me. I know he has to get used to all the background noise and learn how to block it out again. Its crazy though, like, now, we can both watch TV at the level I used to have it at so he wouldn’t hear it. Which means I have to put it in super stealth volume to block it out for him now. But at that point, I can’t even hear it. Anyway, it has made a big difference already and I’m sure it will just continue to get better.
